Akwa State’s delegation to the upcoming second Niger Delta Games, Edo 2026, has begun closed camping activities as the February 20 commencement of the games continues to come into sharper focus.
Over 270 athletes and 46 coaches from 16 sports associations in the state converged at Uyo Township Stadium and moved to the state’s permanent orientation camp of the National Youth Service Corps at Ikot Itie Udung, Nsit Atai LGA, for accreditation and check-in.
Upon arrival at the camp, members of the delegation were seen being given mattresses, buckets, packs of groceries, and meal tickets.
The Chairman of the State Liaison Committee and Commissioner for Sports, Paul Bassey, said that the aim of the exercise was to allow for intensive training and proper physical conditioning, improved fitness, as well as to deepen bonding and engender proper team cohesion.
Bassey noted that athletes were screened and re-screened to ensure that only those who met the criteria for participation were selected to fly the state’s colours when the games get underway.
"They are going to be camped from February 17 to 18 before departing for Edo State directly from the camp on February 19.
"Everything they will be needing while in camp has been completely catered for in consonance with the guidelines of the competition," he said.
The games, sponsored by the Niger Delta Development Commission and organized by Dunamis-Icon Limited, with the theme "Beyond Oil: Harnessing Talents," will be held in Edo State from February 20 to 27.
