Tangier 2026: African Stars Battle for Continental Titles and World Championship Places

Posted : 15 October 2026

Morocco is preparing to host Africa’s leading table tennis players at the ITTF Africa Championships Tangier 2026, scheduled for October 18 to 25. The Royal Moroccan Table Tennis Federation (RMTTF) expects the competition to showcase the continent’s growing talent and strengthen cooperation among African table tennis associations.

RMTTF President Anas Ziati described hosting the championships as a major honour for Morocco. He said the tournament would provide an opportunity for African nations to exchange knowledge, build partnerships, and support the development of the sport.

“Morocco is proud of its African identity, and delighted to host this major event. We look forward to strengthening cooperation, exchanging expertise and working together for the development of our sport in Africa,” Ziati said.

Tangier is expected to welcome players from nearly 30 countries, alongside coaches, technical officials, and national delegations. The week-long competition will feature some of Africa’s leading players, with continental titles and international qualification opportunities at stake.

The championships will also play an important role in the qualification process for the 2027 ITTF World Championships Finals in Astana, Kazakhstan. This adds further significance to the tournament, as players seek to establish themselves among Africa’s best and earn opportunities to compete on the global stage.

Ziati assured participating nations that the organisers were working to provide suitable conditions for competition and accommodation. He also encouraged visitors to experience Tangier’s cultural heritage and hospitality during their stay.

The 2026 edition marks Morocco’s return as host of the continental championships, a decade after Agadir staged the competition in 2016. The event offers the country another opportunity to demonstrate its capacity to host major international sporting competitions and contribute to the growth of African table tennis.

Preparations have received support from Moroccan sports authorities, government stakeholders, and corporate partners. Ziati acknowledged their contributions and called on all stakeholders to help deliver a successful tournament.

“Let us make Tangier 2026 a true celebration of African table tennis, a tournament of excellence, fair play and stronger partnerships for a brighter future,” he said.

Morocco will also seek to make the most of home advantage. The hosts will aim to build on their men's team bronze medal from the previous championships while combining experienced players with emerging talents.

For younger Moroccan players, the tournament presents an opportunity to gain valuable international experience and test their abilities against some of the continent’s strongest opponents. Playing before a home crowd could also provide additional motivation as the national team pursues a strong performance.

With continental titles, qualification opportunities, and national pride at stake, Tangier 2026 is expected to provide a major platform for African table tennis. The championships will also reinforce the importance of international cooperation in developing players and raising the standard of the sport across the continent.
