Rio Takeda, Yoon Ina and Chella Choi share the lead after the opening round of the LPGA Queen City Championship on Thursday, as several of the world’s top-ranked players battled challenging conditions at Maketewah Country Club in Cincinnati, Ohio.
South Korea’s Yoon Ina set the pace with a round featuring an eagle and five birdies, finishing at four-under-par. She was joined at the top on 66 by her compatriot Chella Choi and Japan’s Rio Takeda, who each produced steady rounds of consistent scoring despite late fluctuations.
Choi had surged to six-under with six birdies through 16 holes before closing with consecutive bogeys, while Takeda mixed five birdies with a single dropped shot to maintain her place at the top of the leaderboard.
Just one shot behind is a chasing group that includes South Korea’s Ko Jin-young, Americans Lilia Vu and Amanda Doherty, while defending champion Charley Hull and New Zealand’s Lydia Ko sit a further stroke back after opening rounds of 68.
Hull, who won the title when the event was held at TPC River’s Bend last year, described the Maketewah layout as both “quirky” and challenging, particularly in windy and cold conditions. Despite that, she highlighted the course’s scoring opportunities, pointing to an eagle on the par-five seventh as a key moment in her round.
World No. 1 Nelly Korda and world No. 2 Jeeno Thitikul both opened with one-under-par 69s to remain in contention but three shots off the lead in a field stacked with elite talent.
Korda began steadily with eight straight pars before finding two birdies and a single bogey, continuing her strong run of form this season after multiple top finishes and recent victories.
Jeeno produced one of the most dramatic rounds of the day, recording seven birdies including a hot streak of five in a row, but her aggressive play was offset by six bogeys in a fluctuating performance that left her in the chasing pack heading into the second round.
