Tadej Pogacar Reclaims Yellow Jersey with Dominant Win on Hautacam Climb

Posted : 18 July 2025

Tadej Pogacar produced a masterclass in climbing to win stage 12 of the Tour de France and reclaim the coveted yellow jersey. The Slovenian cyclist showed no signs of fatigue or injury after a crash on Wednesday, powering away from his rivals on the steep slopes of the Hautacam, the Tour's first summit finish and hors catégorie climb of the year.

Despite facing high expectations of an aggressive challenge from Jonas Vingegaard and the Visma-Lease a Bike team, it was Pogacar who seized control early on the punishing 13.5-kilometre ascent. He broke clear and steadily extended his lead, ultimately finishing two minutes and ten seconds ahead of Vingegaard, the rider most considered his biggest threat in the general classification.

The victory pushed Pogacar back into the overall lead, overtaking Ben Healy and widening his gap over Vingegaard to 3 minutes and 31 seconds. It was a striking reversal of fortunes on the same climb where Vingegaard had bested him in 2022.

Reflecting on the moment, Pogacar noted the emotional and symbolic significance of the stage, expressing gratitude for the support of his UAE Emirates-XRG teammates and acknowledging the memory of Italian rider Samuele Privitera, who tragically died in a crash just a day earlier.

Elsewhere in the standings, Remco Evenepoel faced difficulty on the climbs but managed to maintain third place overall, just ahead of Florian Lipowitz. British rider Oscar Onley impressed with a fifth-place stage finish, climbing to sixth in the general classification. Meanwhile, Ben Healy, affected by the soaring Pyrenean temperatures, lost more than 13 minutes, dropping him to 11th place overall.

With more mountain stages and a key time trial still to come, the 2025 Tour de France is far from over—but Pogacar’s emphatic win on Hautacam has firmly re-established him as the man to beat.
