Tadej Pogačar Targets Historic Grand Tour Triple with 2026 Vuelta Return

Posted : 03 August 2026

Fresh from securing a record-equalling fifth Tour de France title, Tadej Pogačar has confirmed that he will compete in this month's Vuelta a España as he bids to complete one of cycling's rarest achievements by winning all three Grand Tours. The Slovenian star, riding for UAE Team Emirates-XRG, returns to the Spanish race for the first time since his breakthrough appearance in 2019, when he finished third overall.

Pogačar heads into the race as the overwhelming favourite after another dominant Tour de France campaign, which saw him join Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Indurain as five-time Tour champions. Having already claimed the Giro d'Italia in 2024, victory at the Vuelta would make him only the ninth rider in history to complete the full set of Grand Tour titles.

The 27-year-old said he was excited to return to Spain, describing the Vuelta as a race that holds special memories because it marked his Grand Tour debut. He added that racing in Spain has always been enjoyable and that the Vuelta represents one of his major objectives as he looks to finish another successful season on a high note.

The 2026 Vuelta a España begins in Monaco on 22 August and concludes in Granada on 13 September after 21 stages featuring individual time trials, sprint opportunities and demanding mountain climbs. UAE Team Emirates-XRG will support Pogačar with a strong squad that includes João Almeida, Pavel Sivakov and Jay Vine as they target another Grand Tour triumph.

Pogačar has already built one of the most decorated careers in modern cycling, with victories in the Tour de France, Giro d'Italia, Road World Championships, Tour of Flanders, Liège-Bastogne-Liège, Milan-San Remo and Il Lombardia. Following the Vuelta, he is also expected to defend his rainbow jersey at the UCI Road World Championships in Montreal, where he will attempt to add another major title to his growing collection.
