The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has signed a strategic partnership with Byblos Travels and Tours Nigeria Limited to provide discounted travel services for sports journalists covering events within Nigeria and abroad.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed in Abuja, offers SWAN members reduced domestic and international airfares, visa advisory services, accommodation support and other travel-related benefits aimed at improving access to sporting assignments.
SWAN President Isaiah Benjamin described the agreement as a major step in the association's efforts to improve members' welfare. He said the leadership carefully reviewed the terms of the partnership before approving the deal, believing it would help address one of the biggest challenges facing sports journalists.
According to Benjamin, the rising cost of air travel has forced many journalists to spend long hours travelling by road to cover sporting events, while others have been unable to attend important assignments because of financial constraints.
He noted that some members travel for up to 13 or 14 hours by road simply because they cannot afford flight tickets, adding that the new partnership is expected to make travel more affordable and safer for journalists.
Benjamin also expressed confidence that the agreement would enable more sports journalists to report from major international events, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations.
Speaking on behalf of Byblos Travels and Tours Nigeria Limited, delegation leader Abubakar Nasrudeen said the company is committed to supporting SWAN members through exclusive travel packages and discounted fares.
He explained that the travel firm, which specialises in airline ticketing, visa processing and tour packages, will provide members with offers that are not generally available to the public. Nasrudeen added that the company will continue to explore additional travel solutions that will benefit sports journalists.
The partnership was facilitated by veteran sports journalist and former SWAN Kano State Secretary, Abdulgafar Oladimeji. He praised the association's leadership for prioritising members' welfare and creating opportunities that support professional growth.
Oladimeji also commended the current leadership for restoring stability within the association, saying the improved unity has created an environment that encourages meaningful partnerships capable of benefiting members across the country.
The agreement comes at a crucial period as preparations continue for several major international competitions. SWAN believes the partnership will improve journalists' mobility, increase coverage of major sporting events and strengthen the quality of sports reporting in Nigeria.
