The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has approved new appointments to its National Executive Committee (NEC) and established three key committees to strengthen governance, professional standards and accountability within the association.

The decisions were approved under the leadership of SWAN President Isaiah Benjamin. Official appointment letters were signed by Secretary-General Ambassador Ikenna Okonkwo as part of efforts to improve administration, promote members' welfare and strengthen the interests of sports journalists across Nigeria.

Among the new appointments, Mallam Olayinka Owolewa of Kwara State has been reappointed Vice President for the North Central Zone. Enitan Obadina of Lagos State has also been appointed National Welfare Officer.

The approved Ex-Officio members are Sani Sulaiman of the North-East, Ambassador Udede Jim-Opiki of the South-South, Alhaji Lurwanu Idris Malikawa Garu of the North-West and Chukwuemeka Opara of the South-East.

The appointments take immediate effect. They are expected to improve coordination between the national leadership and members across the country's geopolitical zones while placing greater emphasis on welfare and effective administration.

Statute Review and Ethics Committee

SWAN has constituted a Statute Review and Ethics, Code of Conduct Committee to review its governing framework and strengthen professional responsibility.

Chief Alloy Chukwuemeka will chair the committee, with Dr. Abdulgafar Oladimeji serving as Vice Chairman and Duku Igbahemba Joel as Secretary.

Other members include Augustine Ajayi, Enitan Obadina, Christian Eze, Alfred Saiki, Okpani Jacob Onjewu Dickson, Chimezie Anaso, Michael-Azeez Ogunsiji and Chinwendu Nnadozie.

The committee will examine the association's existing statutes, identify provisions requiring clarification or amendment, and recommend changes to improve transparency, fairness and accountability. It will also develop an ethics and code of conduct document to promote responsible sports journalism and protect the association's integrity.

Media, Publicity and Marketing Committee

The NEC has also approved a Media, Publicity and Marketing Committee to strengthen SWAN's public image and communication strategy.

Deputy Secretary-General Samuel Ahmadu will chair the committee, while Cecilia Omorogbe will serve as Vice Chairman. Enitan Obadina has been appointed Secretary.

Other members are Cosmos Chukwuemeka of the South-East, Michael Akpang of the South-South, Frank Idemudia Alapa of the North Central and Usman Abbas Shehu, popularly known as Osculator, of the North-East.

The committee will coordinate media relations, publicise the association's programmes and improve the distribution of official information. It will also explore marketing opportunities and strategic partnerships to increase SWAN's visibility and create additional value for members.

Independent Investigative Committee

In a further move to strengthen accountability, SWAN has established an Independent Investigative Committee (IIC) to examine matters referred to it under the association's statutes and procedures.

Niyi Alebiosu of the South-West will chair the committee, with Ex-Officio member Alhaji Lurwanu Idris Malikawa Garu serving as Vice Chairman. Aniete Patrick will serve as Secretary, while Tunde Liadi of the South-East has been named Assistant Secretary.

Other members are Sani Sulaiman of the North-East, Olalekan Sowande of the North Central and Timinepre Ohia of the South-South, who chairs Bayelsa SWAN.

The committee will investigate complaints and other matters within its mandate, establish relevant facts and submit findings and recommendations to the NEC. Its work is intended to reinforce due process, transparency and confidence in the association's internal administration.

SWAN President Benjamin congratulated the appointees and expressed confidence in their ability to contribute their experience and professional expertise to the association's development.

He also disclosed that additional committees would be constituted in due course as SWAN continues efforts to strengthen its structures and advance the interests of sports journalists across Nigeria.
