Sunshine Tour Expands Across Africa with Historic Rwanda Open Launch

The Sunshine Tour has announced a landmark expansion into East Africa with the inaugural Rwanda Open, scheduled for 24-27 September 2026 at Kigali Golf Club. The tournament marks the first Sunshine Tour event to be hosted in Rwanda and forms part of the Tour's strategic alliance with the DP World Tour and PGA TOUR to create greater opportunities for African golfers on the international stage. 

The event will offer a prize fund of R2.5 million and will be staged in partnership with Visit Rwanda, the Rwanda Ministry of Sports and the Rwanda Golf Union. Live television coverage on SuperSport is expected to showcase the championship to audiences across the continent and beyond.

Designed to celebrate African golf, the tournament will feature Sunshine Tour professionals alongside Rwandan professionals, leading amateurs and players from across Africa. The competition is intended to strengthen the development pathway for golfers seeking progression to the HotelPlanner Tour, DP World Tour and eventually the PGA TOUR.

The Rwanda Open is also expected to boost the country's growing reputation as a destination for major international sporting events. Rwanda has expanded its global sports portfolio in recent years, and officials believe the tournament will further promote the country's tourism industry by attracting players, families and golf fans while showcasing its landscapes, wildlife and cultural attractions.

Rwanda's Minister of Sports, Nelly Mukazayire, described the championship as another milestone in the country's ambition to become a leading host of international sporting events. She said the tournament reflects Rwanda's commitment to developing golf while using sport to drive tourism, economic growth and international engagement.

The Sunshine Tour already has an established presence in several African countries, including Zambia, Zimbabwe, Eswatini, Kenya and Uganda. Commissioner Thomas Abt said the addition of Rwanda represents another significant step in expanding professional golf across the continent and creating life-changing opportunities for African players to compete at the highest level.
