Stewart Cink made a flying start at the Stifel Charity Classic in St. Louis on Friday, firing a 7-under-par 64 to seize a one-stroke advantage after the opening round.
The 52-year-old American, who finished third at the event last year when it was called the Ascension Charity Classic, looked right at home at Norwood Hills Country Club.
He rolled in eight birdies across both nines and limited himself to just one bogey. Despite his score, Cink admitted that his round felt better on paper than in execution.
“It wasn’t the kind of round that’s really sustainable,” Cink said. “If I played the same way again, I’d expect more of a 3- or 4-under instead of the low score I got.”
A birdie at the par-4 18th sealed his lead. After an errant drive, Cink managed to escape from a bare patch of dirt, sending his approach shot rolling perfectly to the front of the green before holing out for birdie.
Cink, who already has three PGA Tour Champions titles, including last month’s Ally Challenge, heads into the weekend in strong form.
Denmark’s Thomas Bjorn sits second after a bogey-free stretch of three straight birdies on holes 15–17, finishing with a 6-under 65. He emphasized the importance of accuracy off the tee at Norwood Hills.
“Driving is a big premium this week,” Bjorn said. “From the fairways, the approaches open up. But from the rough, it gets difficult.”
Defending champion Y.E. Yang of South Korea is tied for third on 5-under 66 alongside India’s Arjun Atwal. A group of players at 4-under 67 includes Argentina’s Angel Cabrera, South Africa’s Ernie Els, and Germany’s Alex Cejka.
With two rounds left, the leaderboard is tightly packed, promising a competitive weekend of golf.
