Michael Stewart and Jack Buchanan produced standout opening rounds to share the lead at seven under par after Thursday's first round of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland. Both players carded 65s, finishing one shot clear of South Africans Casey Jarvis and MJ Daffue.
Stewart, ranked 979th in the world, took advantage of a sponsor's invitation to make an immediate impact at Carnoustie. The 36-year-old Scot recorded five birdies and an eagle in a bogey-free round, despite having competed on the Tartan Pro Tour just a day earlier.
Stewart said he felt comfortable on the links layout and was pleased with the way he struck the ball throughout the day. His strong finish included an eagle followed by four consecutive birdies, lifting him to the top of the leaderboard.
Australian Jack Buchanan matched Stewart's seven-under 65 at Kingsbarns. Ranked 788th in the world, Buchanan also completed his round without dropping a shot, making seven birdies to join Stewart at the summit.
Casey Jarvis and MJ Daffue are one shot behind the leaders on six under, while a group of players sits at five under. The chasing pack includes South Africans Hennie Du Plessis, Christiaan Burke, Dean Burmester and Brandon Stone.
Among the tournament's more established names, Matt Fitzpatrick opened with a four-under 68 at Carnoustie after arriving in Scotland fresh from his victory at the Open de France. Five-time major champion Brooks Koepka carded a 69, while defending champion Robert MacIntyre finished with a one-under 71.
MacIntyre was also spoken to by tournament officials after becoming frustrated by a drone operating close to him during his round. The Scottish star expressed his irritation with the drone's proximity while discussing the incident after play.
The Alfred Dunhill Links Championship features professional golfers competing alongside amateurs and celebrities in a unique team format. Players rotate between Carnoustie, Kingsbarns and the Old Course at St Andrews before the final round at St Andrews on Sunday.
