Steven Alker is just two rounds away from claiming his third Charles Schwab Cup Championship in four years, holding a one-shot lead over Stewart Cink after the second round at Phoenix Country Club.
The 54-year-old New Zealander, who previously won the Schwab Cup in 2022 and 2024, posted a second-round 6-under-par 65 to reach 11 under for the tournament and maintain his position atop the season-long points standings.
Cink, who began the day with a one-shot lead after an opening 64, carded a 68 to fall just behind Alker, while Tommy Gainey moved into third place at nine under following a 67.
Alker’s round included five birdies across six holes from the third through the eighth, with only a single bogey blemishing his score. He emphasized his focus on his own game rather than watching the leaderboard.
While winning the event would almost guarantee Alker the season-long championship, his closest competitors remain in striking distance.
Cink, third in the season standings entering the week, and second-place Miguel Ángel Jiménez, who reached eight under with a 65 on Friday, remain in contention. Alker and Cink are scheduled to play together on Saturday.
