Steve Smith Retires from ODIs After Australia's Champions Trophy Exit

Posted : 05 March 2025

Steve Smith has announced his retirement from one-day international cricket following Australia’s semi-final exit from the Champions Trophy. The 35-year-old batsman made 170 ODI appearances for his country, scoring 12 centuries and playing a crucial role in Australia’s World Cup triumphs in 2015 and 2023. His final appearance in the format came as stand-in captain for Pat Cummins, during Australia’s four-wicket defeat to India in Dubai. Despite stepping away from ODIs, Smith will continue to represent Australia in Test and T20 cricket.

Reflecting on his career, Smith expressed gratitude for the memorable moments and achievements he shared with his teammates. Winning two World Cups stood out as key highlights in his journey, alongside the camaraderie he built within the squad.

He emphasized that his retirement would create an opportunity for emerging players to prepare for the 2027 ODI World Cup, making it the right time to step aside. His decision aligns with his focus on Test cricket, where he remains eager to contribute to Australia’s upcoming challenges.

Smith reaffirmed his commitment to the longer format of the game, looking ahead to the World Test Championship final, the West Indies tour, and the home Ashes series against England. He believes he still has much to offer in Test cricket, where his experience and skill continue to be invaluable. As a proven match-winner, his presence will be crucial in Australia’s future red-ball campaigns.

Throughout his ODI career, Smith amassed 5,800 runs at an impressive average of 43.28, with a highest score of 164 against New Zealand at the SCG in 2016. He played pivotal roles in both of Australia’s recent World Cup victories, notably striking the winning boundary in the 2015 final against New Zealand. His contributions to Australian cricket leave a lasting legacy, and while his ODI chapter comes to a close, his influence on the game will endure in Test and T20 formats.
