The Netherlands’ Marrit Steenbergen and Russia’s Egor Kornev emerged as the leading swimmers after the opening stop of the World Aquatics Swimming World Cup in Baku, with both athletes securing three victories.
Kornev capped his campaign with a 21.64-second win in the men’s 50m butterfly, while Steenbergen added to her medal haul with gold in the women’s 100m freestyle.
Kornev finished the Baku leg with three gold medals and a silver to collect 59.3 points and lead the men’s overall standings.
Steenbergen matched that medal tally and accumulated 58.2 points to top the women’s rankings, ahead of Belgium’s Roos Vanotterdijk and China’s Yu Yiting.
South Africa’s Pieter Coetze and China’s Yu Yiting also produced record-breaking performances. Coetze won the men’s 100m backstroke in 49.11 to set an African record, while Yu clocked 2:02.80 in the women’s 200m individual medley for a new Asian record.
The World Cup’s Silk Road Tour now moves to Tashkent, Uzbekistan, from October 8–10 before concluding in Astana, Kazakhstan, from October 15–17.
