Star-Studded Opening Ceremony to Ignite 2nd Niger Delta Games in Benin

Posted : 20 February 2026

Benin City is set for an electrifying evening as top Nigerian music stars take centre stage at the opening ceremony of the 2nd Niger Delta Games, tagged Edo 2026.

The highly anticipated ceremony will hold on February 20 at the iconic Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, officially ushering in a week-long celebration of sports, culture, and youth development across the Niger Delta region.

Organisers have confirmed that award-winning dancehall sensation Patoranking, gospel powerhouse Eben, and crowd-favourite DJ Phyna will deliver headline performances in what promises to be a vibrant fusion of music, culture, and athletic pride. The event, scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. inside the main bowl of the stadium, will also feature a rich cultural showcase reflecting the heritage of the nine oil-producing states.

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, alongside Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa and other top government officials, is expected to grace the occasion. The leadership of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), co-sponsors of the Games, as well as the management of Dunamis Icon Limited, trademark owners of the event, are already in Benin for the ceremony.

The Edo State Sports Commission, led by Amadin Desmond Enabulele, has also intensified preparations to ensure a seamless celebration of sporting excellence and regional unity beyond the oil wealth the Niger Delta is known for.

The Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium has undergone a colourful transformation, adorned with branding that represents the nine participating states and their heroes. Meanwhile, contingents have continued to arrive at the Games Village located at Benson Idahosa University, where athletes and coaches are camped ahead of the competitions scheduled to run from February 20 to 27.

Media professionals and members of various committees have also completed accreditation, with Delta and Bayelsa States among the first to arrive.

Speaking ahead of the ceremony, Chairman of Dunamis Icon Limited, Itiako Malik Ikpokpo, expressed confidence in the level of preparation while emphasizing the need for vigilance.

“We are excited about the progress made so far and what we have lined up. However, this is a crucial moment, and we must remain focused to deliver a truly memorable Games,” he said.

Chairman of the Cultural and Entertainment Committee, Edi Lawani, assured that spectators should expect an unforgettable two-hour showcase packed with A-list music and comedy performances.

With the stage set, sound checks completed, and choreography perfected, Benin City is ready to light the torch for what promises to be a spectacular second edition of the Niger Delta Games.
