Stan Moody delivered the standout performance of his career to date by defeating 2024 World Champion Kyren Wilson 4-2 and securing a place in the last 32 of the Unibet British Open in Cheltenham.
The 19-year-old, ranked world number 55, has enjoyed a strong start to the season, previously reaching the quarter-finals of the Wuhan Open with victories over Barry Hawkins and Ding Junhui. Against Wilson, he produced a superb 132 break to move into a 3-1 lead. Although Wilson responded with an 82 to close the gap, Moody held his nerve and sealed the win with a composed 44 clearance in the sixth frame.
"It's definitely my best win on tour," said a delighted Moody. "Beating Ding in China was good, but this tops it, especially on ITV and in front of a big crowd in Cheltenham. I stayed calm towards the end and felt comfortable out there. I’m getting more used to playing on the TV table." He will now face Ian Burns in the next round.
Elsewhere, four-time world champion John Higgins edged through another thriller, recovering from 3-1 down to defeat Jack Lisowski 4-3. Higgins capitalized on Lisowski’s missed opportunities in frame six before finishing with a century break of 132 to complete the comeback. "I know I need to improve," Higgins admitted. "But the last frame gave me some confidence. My fighting qualities are still there."
China’s Zhao Xintong booked his place in the third round with a 4-1 win over Stuart Bingham, registering breaks of 127 and 133 and becoming the first player this season to reach 20 centuries.
Other results saw Robbie McGuigan edge He Guoqiang 4-3 on the final black, Mark Williams overcome Sanderson Lam 4-3, and Iulian Boiko post a top break of 101 in a 4-2 victory over Sam Craigie. Despite producing a tournament-high 144, Gary Wilson was beaten 4-1 by Anthony McGill, while Neil Robertson moved closer to the 1,000-century milestone with a break of 100 in his 4-1 win over Xu Si.
Meanwhile, Bai Yulu narrowly missed out on becoming the first woman to defeat a top-16 player in a ranking event, losing 4-3 to Zhang Anda despite a spirited fightback.
