Posted : 10 November 2023

As the stage is set for the 62nd First Bank Lagos Golf Open, the organizers announced on Thursday that no fewer than 200 amateur golf players will compete in the 2023 edition scheduled to tee off from November 16 to November 19 at the Ikoyi Club 1938 golf section.

Olusegun Alebiosu, Executive Director, Chief Risk Officer, FirstBank, who represented the Managing Director, Adesola Adeduntan, made this announcement at a press briefing on Thursday in Lagos.

Adeduntan, during the event, reaffirmed FirstBank's commitment to supporting golf, which he described as an aspirational sport that connects people for networking.

"The FirstBank brand is proud to be the headline sponsor of this prestigious golf open. Being the sponsor for 62 consecutive years demonstrates our commitment to our brand. It is a testament to the fact that FirstBank is rock-solid. I'd like to express my appreciation to the Ikoyi Club 1938 golf section for being a solid partner over the years. We welcome both our old and new co-sponsors. Golf is an aspirational sport that requires commitment, focus, and hard work, which are some of our brand's core values as well. It's going to be an exciting tournament," he said.

The Ikoyi Club 1938 golf section features over 54 holes, which will be the focus of the three-day event. The tournament is a World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) listed competition that attracts the best amateur golfers, not only in Nigeria but also from around the world.

The first day of the tournament will be dedicated to charity, with teams from other golf clubs competing, and the proceeds will be donated to two charities.

Wahab Sarumi, the Captain of the Golf Section of Ikoyi Club 1938, praised FirstBank for continuously promoting the game of golf for the past 62 years.

"We're proud to be in partnership with FirstBank. They are truly the first, having sponsored this tournament steadily for more than six decades. This is commendable. Thank you for making use of the facility at Ikoyi Club 1938," he said.

Similarly, Abiona Babatunde, the General Manager of Marketing and Corporate Communications at Coscharis Motors, announced that the winner of this year's edition would receive a Ford Edge Mid SUV 2022 edition.

"We're proud of FirstBank's achievements and the development of golf. This is our contribution as partners of FirstBank. May the best person win," he said.

Bayo Ali, Commercial Director at Guinness Nigeria Plc, mentioned that the Diageo Company was delighted to be a partner with First Bank.

"We hope to have our Singleton lounge ready so that participants can experience our new product," he said.

Ismail Omamegbe, FirstBank's Head of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability, Media and External Relations, emphasized that the brand considers Corporate Social Responsibility a high priority.

"We are committed to our responsibility as a brand to society. We understand the importance of sports to the young population, and we remain dedicated," he said.

Emmanuel Ojeabulu, the winner of the 61st FirstBank Lagos Open Golf Championship, has been listed in the WAGR.
