Sri Lanka edges closer to victory in Second Test against Bangladesh

Posted : 02 April 2024

In the second and final test match, Sri Lanka's bowlers, including Prabath Jayasuriya, Lahiru Kumara, and Kamindu Mendis, demonstrated their prowess by claiming crucial wickets, putting Sri Lanka in a commanding position against Bangladesh.

At stumps on the fourth day, Bangladesh found themselves at 268-7, still requiring a daunting 243 runs for an unlikely victory. Mehidy Hasan Miraz's unbeaten 44-run innings provided some resistance, alongside Taijul Islam's contribution of 10 runs, as they sought to extend the match into the fifth day.

Despite Bangladesh's efforts, Sri Lankan spinners posed significant challenges, with Jayasuriya removing Mominul Haque just before tea after his valiant 50-run effort. Notably, Kamindu broke crucial partnerships, dismissing Shakib Al Hasan and Liton Das, which halted Bangladesh's momentum.

Further breakthroughs came as Sri Lanka's bowlers dismantled Bangladesh's batting lineup, with Mahmudul Hasan, Zakir Hasan, and skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto all departing cheaply, leaving Bangladesh in a precarious position.

Sri Lanka's batting performance earlier in the day saw Angelo Mathews leading the charge with a resilient 56-run innings, supported by contributions from Jayasuriya and Vishwa Fernando. Despite missing Dinesh Chandimal due to a family emergency, Sri Lanka managed to build a substantial lead before declaring at 157-7, setting a challenging target for Bangladesh.

With Sri Lanka's dominant display in both batting and bowling, they remained in a favorable position to secure another convincing victory over Bangladesh, maintaining their unbeaten record in test series against their opponents.
