Hyo Joo Kim and Hye-Jin Choi mastered the swirling winds at Midland Country Club to claim a one-stroke lead heading into the final round of the Dow Championship. The South Korean partnership signed for a resilient 1-under par 69 during Saturday's alternate-shot foursomes session.
Their steady performance placed them as one of only six pairings to break par during a grueling third round. Kim and Choi reached a 54-hole total of 10-under par 200 to establish their narrow advantage. World number 19 Hyo Joo Kim later noted that the fierce gusts presented the biggest challenge of the week so far.
In stark contrast, tournament co-leaders Nelly Korda and Olivia Cowan endured a brutal slide down the leaderboard. The duo managed just a single birdie all day while dropping shots on both par-5 holes. Their 6-over par 76 left them six strokes adrift of the leaders in a tie for 13th place.
The collapse ensures that world number one Korda will miss out on the final Sunday group for just the second time this year. Meanwhile, the American pairing of Gina Kim and rookie Yana Wilson moved into second place at 9-under par. A crucial birdie on the par-3 18th hole secured their round of 70 to sit just one shot back.
Former UCLA teammates Alison Lee and Lilia Vu looked poised to hold the overnight lead before disaster struck on the 16th hole. Two-time major champion Vu pulled her tee shot out-of-bounds, resulting in a costly triple-bogey. The American duo recovered to post a 69, leaving them in third place at 8-under par.
Further down the field, Australian Hira Naveed and American partner Gurleen Kaur remained in contention in a tie for seventh. Hall of Famer Juli Inkster continued her historic week alongside Angel Yin. The 66-year-old Inkster, the oldest player ever to make an LPGA cut, shot a 70 to sit tied for 20th.
