South Africa Women’s Hockey Team Clinches Eighth Consecutive African Title

Posted : 20 October 2025

South Africa dominated Ghana 4–0 in the 2025 African Hockey Cup of Nations final, securing their eighth straight title and qualification for the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup.

The South African women’s hockey team once again asserted their dominance on the African continent with a commanding 4–0 victory over Ghana in the final of the 2025 African Hockey Cup of Nations in Ismailia on Saturday. This triumph marks their eighth consecutive championship and guarantees their place at the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup.

South Africa faced a familiar opponent in Ghana, having narrowly edged them 3–2 during the group stage. However, the final saw the South Africans perform with composure and precision, delivering a clinical display when it mattered most. Jean-Leigh du Toit set the tone early, converting a penalty corner with a blistering drag flick to give her team the lead within minutes. Shortly after, Kayla de Waal doubled the advantage with a deft finish from a deflected ball, capping a dream start for the defending champions.

Throughout the first half, South Africa maintained relentless pressure, controlling possession and dictating the tempo. Their efforts paid off late in the second quarter when another sustained series of penalty corners led to Du Toit scoring her second of the match, following an earlier goal from Hannah Pearce. By halftime, the South Africans had built a comfortable 4–0 lead.

In the second half, South Africa continued to dominate, showcasing their trademark composure. Their defensive line remained solid and unyielding, while the midfield controlled the rhythm of the game. Despite additional opportunities and penalty corners, the score remained unchanged as the match drew to a close.

When the final whistle blew, it marked yet another historic achievement for South African women’s hockey: an eighth consecutive African championship and a sixth straight final win over Ghana. The victory not only reinforces their continental supremacy but also secures their spot at the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup, continuing to represent African hockey with distinction on the world stage.
