South Africa Leads While Nigeria Holds Second Place in African Track Cycling Standings

The Cycling Federation of Nigeria has published the official medal standings for the ongoing 2026 African Track Cycling Championships in Abuja. Continental powerhouse South Africa continues to dominate the multi-nation event at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium Velodrome. Host nation Nigeria maintains a firm grip on the second position as the competition approaches its final stages.

A total of 103 medals have been distributed so far among the elite athletes. The official count consists of 36 gold, 35 silver, and 32 bronze medals across multiple racing events. The 12th edition of the Confederation of African Cycling track showpiece commenced on May 11, 2026. The week-long continental tournament features high-level representation from eight participating nations.

South Africa comfortably sits at the summit of the medal table with 38 points. The leading delegation has gathered an impressive haul of 19 gold, 10 silver, and nine bronze medals. Team Nigeria remains in second place after accumulating 23 points on home soil. The host country has successfully secured seven gold, seven silver, and nine bronze medals.

North African rivals Egypt and Algeria occupy the third and fourth positions respectively. The Egyptian team has earned seven gold, four silver, and eight bronze medals for a total of 19 points. Algeria follows closely with 20 points after claiming three gold, 12 silver, and five bronze medals. West African neighbors Benin Republic complete the top five spots with two silver and one bronze medal.

The tournament venue previously hosted the 3rd CAC Para Cycling Championships from May 9 to May 11. Nigeria dominated the para-cycling category by finishing at the top of the standings. The hosts captured nine gold, five silver, and two bronze medals to secure 16 points. Egypt finished second in the para standings, while Kenya and South Africa placed third and fourth.

The complete list of competing countries includes Zimbabwe, Ghana, Kenya, and Egypt. Cycling Federation of Nigeria officials expressed satisfaction with the overall organization of the double continental events. The final track races will determine the ultimate award winners before the closing ceremony.
