Posted : 07 November 2026

South Africa made an impressive start to the 2026 All Africa Challenge Trophy (AACT), taking the early lead after the opening round of the continental women's golf championship at the IBB International Golf and Country Club in Abuja.

The South African team returned a combined 154 strokes on Day One to establish a six-stroke advantage over second-placed Kenya, which finished with 158 strokes.

Tanzania occupied third position with 160 strokes, while Uganda followed in fourth place with 163 strokes. Host nation Nigeria completed the top five after returning 166 strokes in the opening round.

The competition features 20 African countries battling for continental honours across three rounds of 18 holes, making it a 54-hole championship.

Zambia finished sixth with 167 strokes, followed by Botswana with 170 strokes in seventh position. Ghana occupied eighth place with 172 strokes, while Zimbabwe and Tunisia completed the top 10 with 174 and 176 strokes respectively.

In the individual standings, South Africa's Isabella Ferreira emerged as the first-round leader after recording four strokes over par (+4).

Ferreira expressed satisfaction with her opening performance but acknowledged the importance of maintaining consistency as the championship progressed.

Kenya's Kanana Muthomi occupied second position with five strokes over par (+5), while Uganda's Keisha Kagoro and South Africa's Lourenda Steyn shared third place after recording six strokes over par (+6).

Kagoro said she was encouraged by her opening performance and remained determined to improve in the remaining rounds.

She said the competition was strong but stressed the importance of maintaining focus, trusting her game and building on her positive start.

Botswana's Loapi Chokwe occupied fifth position with seven strokes over par (+7). Tanzania's Neema Olomi and Madina Iddy were tied on eight strokes over par (+8), while Kenya's Bianca Ngecu and Kellie Gachaga both returned nine strokes over par (+9).

Nigeria's Juliana Ehinomhen finished among the leading 10 players, recording 10 strokes over par (+10) to share 10th position.

Her performance offers encouragement for the host nation as the Nigerian team looks to improve its overall standing in the remaining rounds.

The 2026 AACT was officially declared open on Tuesday by Nigeria's First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu. The championship brings together some of the continent's leading female golfers in a competition designed to promote women's golf and strengthen international sporting relationships across Africa.

With South Africa setting the early pace, Nigeria faces an important challenge in the remaining rounds as it seeks to close the gap and secure a stronger finish on home soil.
