South Africa Enters Race to Become Africa’s First Olympic Games Host

Posted : 07 October 2026

South Africa has formally entered the race to host the 2036 Olympic Games, joining India, Qatar, Germany, South Korea, Hungary and Turkey among countries seeking to stage the global multi-sport event. The bid could give Africa its first opportunity to host the Olympics.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has opened a dialogue process for interested countries and regions. Potential bidders have until the end of October 2026 to submit their formal interest before feasibility studies, presentations and further evaluations begin.

The final host selection is expected to be made by IOC members in 2029. The process will first see interested parties assessed before the IOC executive board determines a shortlist of candidates.

South Africa enters the process with experience of staging major international sporting events. The country became the first African nation to host the FIFA World Cup in 2010, with matches played across several cities and venues. That tournament demonstrated the country's ability to deliver a major global sporting competition.

A successful Olympic bid would represent a much larger hosting challenge. The Games require extensive sporting venues, accommodation, transport infrastructure and security arrangements, along with facilities capable of supporting thousands of athletes and officials.

South Africa faces competition from several established sporting nations. India is regarded as a major contender and already has Ahmedabad scheduled to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games. The Indian city is located in Gujarat, the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Qatar is also pursuing the Games after unsuccessful bids for the 2016 and 2020 Olympics. The country could use infrastructure developed for the 2022 FIFA World Cup as part of its hosting proposal.

Germany has selected Munich as its potential host city after the country's sports authority, DOSB, backed the Bavarian capital. South Korea, Hungary and Turkey are also among the countries that have expressed formal interest.

South Korea and Germany have previous Olympic hosting experience. Seoul hosted the 1988 Summer Olympics, while Berlin staged the 1936 Games and Munich hosted the 1972 edition.

Indonesia's proposal to host the 2036 Games in Nusantara is no longer in the process. The IOC rejected the bid after a dispute linked to Indonesia's refusal to allow Israeli athletes to compete at the 2025 World Gymnastics Championships in Jakarta.

South Africa's bid now enters a competitive international process that will determine whether the continent can secure its first Olympic Games.
