Smith Returns as England Reshuffle Squad for Six Nations Clash Against Wales

Posted : 12 March 2025

Marcus Smith has been recalled to England's starting lineup at full-back for their Six Nations clash against Wales, while Tommy Freeman shifts to outside centre. Smith returns at 15 after being left out of the starting side against Italy, and Freeman, who has primarily played on the wing, fills in for the injured Ollie Lawrence. In a restructured backline, Elliot Daly moves to the wing, and Tom Roebuck takes over from Ollie Sleightholme on the opposite flank.

Head coach Steve Borthwick has also made adjustments to the forward pack, with Ben Curry joining his twin brother Tom in the back row and Ben Earl reverting to number eight. Luke Cowan-Dickie will start at hooker, while prop Will Stuart is set to earn his 50th Test cap. England remains in contention for the Six Nations title and will face a struggling Wales side looking for their first Test victory since October 2023.

Among the replacements, England has opted for a six-two split between forwards and backs, with young back-row talent Henry Pollock poised to make his Test debut. Veteran fly-half George Ford is also included on the bench for the first time in this year’s tournament and could earn his 99th international cap if called upon.
