Six Zones to Battle for National Sports Festival Team-Sports Qualifiers

The race for places at the 23rd National Sports Festival, tagged Coal City Games 2026, will enter a crucial phase as teams across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones battle for qualification from Sept. 12 to 15.

The four-day zonal elimination will determine the teams that will represent their respective zones in the team-sport events at the Festival scheduled for Enugu State.

Basketball, cricket, football and volleyball, including beach volleyball, will feature in the qualifying competition across the male and female categories.

Under the qualification format approved for the Games, the top two teams from each zone will secure their places at the National Sports Festival.

Host state Enugu, however, will enjoy automatic qualification in all the featured team sports.

The Main Organising Committee (MOC) has directed the zonal coordinators to intensify preparations for the eliminations and forward proposed venues for the competitions.

The coordinators are also expected to ensure strict compliance with the rules and regulations of the Games throughout the qualification process.

The zonal exercise is expected to provide teams with an opportunity to secure early passage to the national stage while ensuring that only the best-performing sides emerge from each zone.

The 23rd National Sports Festival, themed “Excellence, Sportsmanship and Unity,” will hold in Enugu from Nov. 27 to Dec. 11, 2026.
