Six-Way Tie as Tom Kim Leads Charge at Weather-Delayed Charles Schwab Challenge

Posted : 29 May 2026

Tom Kim is among six players tied for the lead after an eventful opening round at the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas, where weather delays and shifting momentum shaped play on Thursday. Kim finished with a 6-under-par 64 despite a two-hour suspension caused by a dangerous weather situation at Colonial Country Club.

Joining him at the top of the leaderboard are J.J. Spaun, Ryan Gerard, Andrew Putnam, Matt McCarty and Lee Hodges, all finishing the day at 6-under-par.

Play was suspended at 4:15 p.m. local time due to unsafe weather conditions and resumed more than two hours later. At the time of the interruption, Gerard and Putnam were in the clubhouse lead, while Kim still had one hole remaining to complete his round. The South Korean golfer calmly two-putted from long range to secure par and maintain his share of the lead.

Kim produced a strong scoring run earlier in the round, collecting seven birdies across an eight-hole stretch, though a brief sequence of bogeys on the back nine slightly slowed his momentum. Despite the disruption, he remained satisfied with his performance and focus throughout the day.

He admitted the weather delay made finishing the round frustrating but stressed the importance of recovery and preparation for the next day as he looks to build consistency in his game. Once regarded as one of golf’s brightest young talents, Kim has previously won three PGA Tour titles but has since slipped in the world rankings.

Spaun finished with a bogey-free round, adding a closing birdie after play resumed to complete a steady performance. Fresh off his Valero Texas Open victory, he is aiming to carry momentum into the upcoming U.S. Open, where he will defend his title.

Gerard also impressed with an aggressive display featuring eight birdies, crediting his strong driving and improved putting for his position near the top of the leaderboard.

Putnam’s error-free round keeps him in contention for a second PGA Tour win, while McCarty remains part of the tightly packed leading group after a consistent opening effort.

Hodges briefly moved to 7-under before a late bogey dropped him back into the tie, though he noted that softened course conditions could lead to lower scoring as the tournament progresses.

A crowded group sits just one shot behind at 5-under, including major winners such as Keegan Bradley, Brian Harman and Gary Woodland, while others remain well within striking distance heading into the next round.
