Adewale Shittu on Saturday emerged as the winner of the third edition of the Senior Special (SS28) Golf Championship at the Ibadan Golf Club (IGC).
Shittu, who plays off a 28 handicap, emerged as the overall winner after scoring 103 gross and 75 net.
The SS28 tournament was held for 28-handicap players to encourage them and provide an opportunity to play and mingle with experienced golfers on the course.
Speaking after the presentation, Shittu attributed his success to hard work and a deep love for the game.
He promised, however, to improve his handicap, noting that consistency is key in golf.
“I will continue to work hard to improve my handicap, and the only way to do this is to be regular on the course,” the winner said.
The Captain of the club, Seyi Alaba, speaking during the competition’s closing ceremony, said no fewer than 120 golfers participated in the event.
“It was unprecedented to have such a large number. However, I can assure you that the competition is here to stay,” he said.
“I appreciate the members and individuals who contributed to the success of the tournament.”
Alaba lauded Adedeji Olajide, a member of the Federal House of Representatives representing the Ibadan South-West/North-West Constituency, who was a major donor to the championship.
He added that the competition was part of the club’s commitment to promoting the game of golf among members and within the state.
The club captain emphasized that the event served as a social gathering, offering opportunities for networking and sharing experiences among players.
He highlighted the importance of inclusivity and the role of senior golfers at the club.
“I can say there has been an improvement among the 28-handicap players, based on some of today’s results. We observed that many of our members have stayed at a 28 handicap for a long time, and that is the essence of organizing this championship.
“With this tournament, some of those who played better will be upgraded to the next handicap,” Alaba said.
Similarly, Olajide pledged to do more for the development of sports, especially within the golfing community.
He described the game as a life-changing pursuit that contributes to living a good life and maintaining physical health.
A former Lady Captain of the club, Otolola Adesiyan, claimed the Ladies’ Guest Best Nett winner’s title with a score of 94 gross and 73 net.
