Former champion Shaun Murphy delivered a commanding performance at the World Snooker Championship, defeating China’s Xiao Guodong 13-3 to become the first player to reach the 2026 quarter-finals.
Murphy, who won the title in 2005 and reached the final on three further occasions, went into the second session with a 6-2 lead. He then accelerated away from his opponent, winning seven of the next eight frames to close out the match with a session to spare.
The 43-year-old eighth seed produced a series of high-quality breaks, including 93, 66, 103, 69, 115, and 103, underlining his strong form at the Crucible. His victory sets up a quarter-final clash against the winner of the all-Chinese tie between reigning world champion Zhao Xintong and veteran Ding Junhui.
Murphy expressed delight with his performance, saying it is rare to win so convincingly at this level. He reflected on his long career, noting that while he is not desperate for another world title, the desire to win again remains strong.
The Englishman last reached the quarter-finals in 2021 and believes he is still improving despite his long career. He added that he continues to enjoy practice and competition, insisting that his best snooker may still be ahead of him.
