Shane Lowry Seizes Irish Open Lead With Course-Record 62

Shane Lowry produced a spectacular second round at the Irish Open, carding a course-record 62 to move three shots clear at the halfway stage at Trump International Golf Links in Doonbeg. The Irishman reached 11 under par after a nine-birdie display that put him firmly in control of the tournament.

Lowry, who famously won the Irish Open as an amateur in 2009, took full advantage of the calmer conditions after Thursday's difficult weather. He began with two pars before making three consecutive birdies and added another three in a row later on the front nine to make the turn in six-under 30.

The 39-year-old continued his charge with birdies at the 11th and 12th holes, briefly raising the possibility of a sub-60 round.

However, a three-putt at the 13th resulted in his only bogey of the day. He responded with another birdie at the 15th before closing with three straight pars to complete his record-breaking round.

Lowry admitted that a 59 had crossed his mind after such a fast start but said the three-putt ended those thoughts. Despite that setback, he remained pleased with his performance and now sits three strokes ahead of China's Haotong Li and Denmark's Jacob Skov Olesen heading into the weekend.

Defending champion Rory McIlroy, meanwhile, was unable to make significant progress despite a few moments of brilliance. The Northern Irishman produced an impressive approach from 267 yards to set up an eagle at the eighth, but missed several birdie opportunities and eventually finished with a second successive 69.

McIlroy also dropped a shot at the 11th and endured a costly three-putt bogey on the final hole after leaving his approach just four feet from the pin. He finished nine shots behind Lowry at two under par and acknowledged that his putting had been the main weakness over the opening two rounds.

The defending champion said he had been satisfied with his game from tee to green but struggled to read the greens.

McIlroy will need a significant improvement with the putter if he is to mount a challenge over the final two rounds.
