Nigeria’s Sand Eagles will need a spirited response in the return leg after Ghana’s Black Sharks claimed a 5–4 penalty shootout victory following a pulsating 4–4 draw in their 2026 Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations (BSAFCON) qualifier in Kaduna on Saturday.
The result gave Ghana an advantage in the two-legged contest, leaving Nigeria with the task of securing an away victory in Keta next Sunday to keep their hopes of reaching the continental showpiece alive.
Isa Hamza Manga was Nigeria’s standout performer, scoring a hat-trick to keep the hosts in contention against the Black Sharks.
Manga opened the scoring and continued to trouble the Ghanaian defence, while Ekene Obi struck in extra time as the Sand Eagles fought to secure a decisive result on home sand.
However, Ghana refused to surrender, with Mawuli Sosu scoring twice before Wise Nyamadi found the equaliser in extra time to force the encounter into a penalty shootout.
The Black Sharks held their nerve from the spot, converting enough attempts to secure a 5–4 victory and leave Nigeria facing a demanding assignment in the return fixture.
Despite Manga’s impressive contribution, the Sand Eagles could not turn their attacking display into a first-leg victory, allowing Ghana to take a crucial psychological advantage into the decisive encounter.
Nigeria must now deliver a stronger all-round performance in Keta, where victory will be essential to their ambition of qualifying for the 2026 BSAFCON in Senegal.
The winner of the two-legged tie will earn a place at the continental tournament, making next Sunday’s return leg a decisive test of the Sand Eagles’ resilience and qualification ambitions.
