The 2026 World Snooker Tour World Grand Prix got underway in Hong Kong with a compelling first day of Round 1 action, as leading contenders and emerging stars battled for places in the next stage of the prestigious ranking event.
Former world champion Mark Selby delivered one of the most authoritative performances of the day, sweeping aside Aaron Hill with a flawless 5–0 victory. Selby was in complete control throughout the encounter, showing his trademark tactical discipline and clinical finishing to seal a swift passage into Round 2.
One of the standout results came from China’s Xiao Guodong, who produced a confident display to defeat Kyren Wilson 5–2. Xiao capitalised on key chances and maintained pressure in the safety exchanges, sending the highly rated Wilson out of the tournament at the first hurdle.
Elliot Slessor also enjoyed a strong start to his campaign, overcoming former world champion Stuart Bingham by the same 5–2 scoreline. Slessor’s composed performance and consistency proved decisive as he booked his place in the next round.
Completing a successful day for the Chinese contingent, Zhou Yuelong claimed a 5–2 win over Stephen Maguire. Zhou’s sharp break-building and solid match play allowed him to pull clear after a closely contested early phase.
With several big names already eliminated, the opening day set the tone for an unpredictable World Grand Prix in Hong Kong, as attention now turns to the remaining first-round matches and the entry of more top-ranked stars.
