The Lagos derby delivered every bit of its pre-match anticipation on Thursday as Lagos Seasiders stunned defending champions Tojemarine Academy 23–22 with a last-second winner in one of the most dramatic fixtures of the Ardova Handball Premier League 2025 Phase 2 at the Rowe Park Sports Center in Yaba.
The Seasiders, who trailed for long stretches of the match, kept their composure in a tense finish and capitalised on a late turnover to snatch victory from their city rivals.
Tojemarine, champions of the previous edition, pushed hard in the closing moments but were undone by a decisive final play that sparked wild celebrations on the Seasiders’ bench.
Earlier in the men’s games, COAS Shooters continued their strong form with a comfortable 34–24 victory over Correction Boys after taking a 15–13 lead into halftime.
Benue Buffaloes survived a late surge to edge Osun United 23–22, having built an early 13–8 advantage but struggling to maintain momentum in the second half.
Safety Shooters were awarded a 10–0 walkover win after Adamawa Warriors failed to appear.
In the final match of the men’s round, Rima Strikers delivered a spirited second-half performance to defeat Niger United 27–22, overturning an 11–14 halftime deficit to claim an impressive comeback win.
In the women’s category, reigning champions Safety Babes were tested but ultimately secured a 32–29 victory over a determined Plateau Peacocks side.
The Peacocks led 17–16 at halftime, but Safety Babes’ depth and composure once again proved crucial as they continued their pursuit of a historic fifth consecutive league title.
Rima Queens kept their title hopes alive with a narrow 28–26 win over Omo Ogiefo Academy, overturning a one-goal halftime deficit, while Imo Grasshoppers returned to winning ways by holding off a strong late push from Defender Babes to win 34–32.
Ekiti Queens also earned a hard-fought 28–26 victory over Rivers Queens in another tightly contested encounter.
