Scottie Scheffler Starts Title Defense with Solid Round

Posted : 23 May 2025

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler started his bid for a third consecutive victory with a steady two-under-par 68 at the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas. After winning the PGA Championship and the CJ Cup Byron Nelson recently, Scheffler is aiming to become the first player since Dustin Johnson in 2017 to win three tournaments in a row.

Despite a promising start with an eagle and a birdie, Scheffler struggled with his tee shots throughout the round and admitted the firm greens and gusty winds made it a challenging day.

American rookie John Pak stole the spotlight after posting a flawless seven-under 63 to take a three-shot lead at the Colonial Country Club. Pak’s round was highlighted by a remarkable eagle on his opening hole, a hole-out from 147 yards that set the tone for his bogey-free performance.

Despite being in his first full PGA Tour season, Pak showed impressive composure and course knowledge, partly thanks to a prior appearance at Colonial courtesy of a sponsor’s exemption.

Trailing Pak by three shots, a group of nine players, including Japan’s Ryo Hisatsune, Germany’s Matti Schmid, and England’s Matt Wallace, are all within striking distance heading into the next rounds.

Scheffler remains hopeful that softer conditions will help him improve his game as the tournament progresses and is prepared for the course to firm up further with little rain expected during the week.
