Scottie Scheffler makes history with back-to-back players championship wins

Posted : 18 March 2024

Scottie Scheffler showcased remarkable resilience and skill as he battled through a neck injury and rallied from a record five-shot deficit in the final round to clinch victory at the Players Championship, becoming the first man to defend the title. Despite enduring discomfort from his neck injury during the tournament, the world number one delivered an outstanding performance, carding an impressive eight-under 64 in the final round.

Scheffler's stellar performance saw him finish on a total score of 20 under par, narrowly edging out fellow Americans Brian Harman, Wyndham Clark, and Xander Schauffele by one shot in a thrilling finish at Sawgrass. Harman, Schauffele, and Clark all had opportunities to force a playoff but missed crucial putts on the 18th hole, allowing Scheffler to secure the historic victory.

Reflecting on his achievement, Scheffler expressed the significance of winning successive Players titles, highlighting the rarity of such an accomplishment in golf. Despite the challenges posed by his neck injury, Scheffler persevered and delivered a remarkable final round, matching the record comeback wins of past champions Justin Leonard and Henrik Stenson. His victory stands as a testament to his resilience and determination on the golf course.
