Scheffler Leads Star Practice Rounds as Aronimink Prepares for PGA Championship

Posted : 12 May 2026

Defending champion Scottie Scheffler joined several of the world’s best golfers on Monday as they began practice rounds at Aronimink Golf Club ahead of the 108th PGA Championship, which starts on Thursday. The tournament returns to the historic Pennsylvania course, known for its demanding layout and fast, undulating greens.

The 7,394-yard, par-70 course features 174 bunkers and a layout that challenges precision more than power, with players expecting the greens to be the decisive factor in the week’s scoring conditions.

Jordan Spieth, a three-time major winner, explained that early practice sessions are focused on learning the course, especially understanding pin positions and identifying safe versus aggressive approaches. He stressed the importance of studying “deceptive shots” that could define scoring opportunities.

Scheffler, who has enjoyed a strong season with multiple near wins, spent time working with both his swing and putting coaches before heading out for his practice round after a short break. The world number one enters the championship in excellent form, having consistently finished near the top in recent majors and tournaments.

Keegan Bradley, the 2011 PGA Championship winner, highlighted the difficulty of Aronimink’s greens, describing them as heavily contoured and demanding precise distance control. He noted that while driving the ball is not overly punishing, approach shots into the greens will determine success or failure.

Matt Fitzpatrick also pointed to the greens as the key defence of the course, explaining that their severity and tricky pin placements could heavily influence scoring. He added that distance off the tee may provide an advantage, but only if players avoid leaving difficult angles into the greens.

Spieth also reflected on how preparation has changed over time, saying players now focus more on conserving energy and refining strategy rather than long practice sessions. He emphasized that at this stage, physical preparation cannot be rushed.

Meanwhile, Jake Knapp withdrew from the field due to injury, with Tom Hoge stepping in as a replacement for the tournament.
