Scott Hend has positioned himself for a historic milestone at the Senior PGA Championship being held at the Concession Golf Club. The 52-year-old Australian carded a superb seven-under-par 65 during the second round to move to 10-under for the tournament. He currently shares the top spot on the leaderboard with American Brian Gay as the competition heads into the weekend.
Hend benefited from an early tee time on Friday morning to navigate the course before the wind increased. He started his round with precision and recorded eight birdies throughout the day. A notable stretch included three consecutive birdies starting at the 11th hole and two more late in the round at the 16th and 17th.
Despite having 18 professional wins across Australia, Asia, and Europe, Hend has never tasted victory in the United States. He spent time on the PGA Tour in 2004 and 2005 but primarily found success on the Asian Tour. Since turning 50 in 2023, he has remained competitive by winning three times on the European Legends Tour.
The leaderboard remains crowded with high-profile major champions and veteran winners. American Stewart Cink, South African Retief Goosen, and Ben Crane are tied for third place at eight-under-par. Hend acknowledged the quality of the field and noted that he must stay aggressive to secure the trophy.
The Australian star is motivated by the prospect of earning full-time playing privileges on the Champions Tour in America. He previously finished in fourth place during his debut in this event two years ago in Michigan. Hend stated after his round that he hopes to improve on that finish and finally add American silverware to his extensive trophy collection.
