Scotland’s Kelsey Macdonald Sets Sanctuary Cove Course Record to Lead Australian WPGA Championship

Posted : 19 March 2026

Scotland’s Kelsey Macdonald stole the spotlight in the opening round of the Australian WPGA Championship, carding a stunning seven‑under‑par 64 at Sanctuary Cove. Her score not only led the field through 18 holes but also set a new course record at the Queensland venue.

Macdonald got off to a rocky start with a bogey on the first hole, but she quickly found her rhythm. Six birdies and a dramatic eagle on the final hole propelled her to the top of the leaderboard, giving her a one‑shot advantage as the day concluded.

Close behind the Scot were home favourite Hannah Green and rising English talent Charlotte Heath. Both players also struggled early with a bogey on the first hole but rallied to post strong rounds, finishing just one stroke back of Macdonald.

Other contenders also made their mark, including a group of four players tied for fourth on five‑under par. Among them was England’s Meghan MacLaren, who has been enjoying solid form after a runner‑up finish at the Australian Women’s Classic two weeks earlier.

Macdonald, originally from Inverness, struggled initially but turned her round around with an impressive back nine performance, closing in 29 strokes after a 35 on the front nine. She credited her strong play to seizing scoring opportunities throughout the round and the benefit of spending the Australian summer honing her game after earning her WPGA Tour card.

Heath, a 24‑year‑old LET Access Series graduate who has represented Great Britain & Ireland in the Curtis Cup, also impressed with seven birdies and just the one bogey. Speaking afterward, she said the course’s similarity to Florida’s Bermuda grass made her feel right at home, reflecting her current base in the United States.
