Scheffler Targets Back-to-Back Majors as US Open Begins at Grueling Oakmont

Posted : 12 June 2025

Top-ranked golfer Scottie Scheffler begins his pursuit of a second consecutive major title as the US Open tees off at Oakmont Country Club. Known for its punishing rough, lightning-fast greens, and treacherous bunkers, Oakmont is widely regarded as one of the toughest courses in the world.

Bryson DeChambeau, last year’s US Open champion, declared it likely the hardest course currently in play. Scheffler echoed that sentiment, emphasizing the difficulty of recovering from missed fairways. With three wins in his past four starts, including the PGA Championship, Scheffler’s current form sets up a high-stakes battle between golf’s best and one of its most challenging venues.

Scheffler’s first round begins at 1:25 p.m. local time, where he’ll play alongside fellow top-ranked players Collin Morikawa and Viktor Hovland. This US Open marks a chance for Scheffler to become the first player since Jordan Spieth in 2015 to win back-to-back majors.

Despite being the betting favorite, Scheffler avoids paying attention to odds, citing a negative experience with online betting requests. Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy, who completed the career Grand Slam with a Masters win in April, will start off the 10th tee at 7:40 a.m. alongside Justin Rose and Shane Lowry, hoping to join a short list of legends who’ve won the Masters and US Open in the same year.

The field includes 156 players selected from a record-breaking 10,202 entries, with only the top 60 and ties advancing to the weekend rounds. Among the early starters is former Oakmont caddie turned dentist Matt Vogt, who will hit the opening shot.

DeChambeau, aiming for his third US Open in six years, tees off with Xander Schauffele and Spanish amateur Jose Luis Ballester. Phil Mickelson, who needs a US Open win to complete the career Grand Slam, also returns to action. The six-time runner-up starts at 8:02 a.m. as thunderstorms loom on the weekend horizon, adding further uncertainty to an already formidable test.
