Scheffler Shines with Record Start Amid Weather Delays at CJ Cup Byron Nelson

Posted : 03 May 2025

Scottie Scheffler showcased exceptional form in the second round of the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, carding an eight-under-par 63 to build a commanding lead. Despite enduring a storm delay of over six hours, the world number one maintained his composure, finishing the day on 18-under-par with a bogey-free round. His performance at TPC Craig Ranch marked the best 36-hole start of his PGA Tour career and set a new course record, making this a strong final warm-up ahead of the PGA Championship.

Scheffler, playing near his home in McKinney, Texas, praised the conditions and his ability to adapt despite the challenges brought on by heavy rain. He spent the delay bonding with fellow players and staying relaxed in the dining area before returning to increasingly wet but manageable fairways. Even in those conditions, he delivered crisp approaches and putts, including an eagle at the par-five 18th and birdies on the opening holes of his second nine.

As Friday’s action wrapped, American Sam Stevens climbed to second with a 65, four shots back at 14-under, while other competitors like Ricky Castillo and Jhonattan Vegas remained within striking distance. However, with such a dominant performance, Scheffler appeared well poised to capitalize on his lead. Having led from the start with a season-best 61 in the first round, he’s now in strong contention for his first win of the season after a highly successful previous year.

Scheffler emphasized the importance of staying focused through the weekend, citing his past experience managing leads as a key asset. His second round ended on a high note with a string of well-executed birdies, including a bunker save on the final hole. Confident and composed, Scheffler aims to maintain his momentum and secure victory as the tournament heads into the final two days.
