Scheffler Hails Clark’s Grit in Emotional US Open Victory at Shinnecock

Posted : 22 June 2026

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler has praised Wyndham Clark for showing remarkable composure under pressure from both the New York crowd and the demanding Shinnecock Hills course after securing his second US Open title on Sunday.

Scheffler, who finished in a tie for fourth after a one-over-par final round of 71, ended the tournament on 280 strokes. He was in close contention throughout the final day but ultimately fell short as Clark edged fellow American Sam Burns by a single shot to claim the championship.

Reflecting on the atmosphere, Scheffler described the crowd as particularly intense, noting that playing in New York comes with added pressure due to passionate spectators. He admitted that moments of crowd reaction during missed shots could feel overwhelming at times.

Although he stopped short of comparing it to extreme incidents in other events, Scheffler said the environment was still challenging enough to highlight Clark’s mental strength and resilience. He added that performing under such conditions is not easy and praised Clark for handling it exceptionally well.

Clark delivered key moments down the stretch, including a crucial 24-foot birdie putt on the 16th hole and a composed two-putt par from long range on the final hole to secure victory. Scheffler noted that Clark’s ability to recover from difficult positions was a defining factor in his success.

He also pointed out Clark’s strong scrambling ability, crediting him for saving par in critical situations throughout the round and staying composed when under pressure.

Despite entering the final round six shots behind, Scheffler believed he still had a chance to win if Clark had played even par. However, he acknowledged that while he came close, his execution was not sharp enough to overtake the leader.

The result marked Scheffler’s fourth runner-up finish of the season, including another close call at a major championship. Although he has already secured a win earlier in the year, he admitted that his overall game is still a work in progress.

Scheffler said he is gradually finding better rhythm in his swing but emphasized the need for greater consistency at the start of tournaments. He added that while his performance throughout the week showed promise, he was unable to convert enough putts to mount a serious challenge.
