Schauffele takes commanding lead at 50th Players Championship

Posted : 17 March 2024

In a remarkable display of skill and determination, Xander Schauffele surged ahead with a flawless third round at the 50th Players Championship, grabbing a one-shot lead as the tournament heads into its final day. Schauffele's bogey-free 65, highlighted by seven birdies, propelled him to 17 under par at Sawgrass, overtaking overnight leader Wyndham Clark, who sits at 16 under after a scrappy 70. Meanwhile, Open champion Brian Harman trails closely behind at 15 under following an impressive 64, with Matt Fitzpatrick also in contention at 13 under after a late surge.

Fitzpatrick, aiming to become the first English player to win the PGA Tour's flagship event, showcased resilience and skill with a remarkable back nine, including six birdies in his final 10 holes. Despite early setbacks, Fitzpatrick's unwavering determination and improved attitude propelled him back into contention, positioning himself as a strong contender for the title as the tournament reaches its climax.

As the top contenders jostle for position, Scottie Scheffler remains in the mix despite playing through a neck injury, sitting one shot behind Fitzpatrick. With physiotherapy during Friday's round and visible discomfort, Scheffler displayed grit and resilience, finishing his round with three consecutive birdies. Meanwhile, world number one Rory McIlroy closed the day on a high note with three successive birdies, but inconsistency continues to challenge his bid for victory.

As the tension mounts heading into the final day, Schauffele's impressive performance has positioned him as the frontrunner, closely pursued by Clark and Harman. With Fitzpatrick and Scheffler also in contention, Sunday's finale promises an exhilarating battle for the coveted Players Championship title.
