Schauffele Stays in Baycurrent Classic Hunt After Eventful Third Round

Posted : 10 October 2026

Defending champion Xander Schauffele remained in contention at the Baycurrent Classic in Japan after producing an eventful third round on Saturday. The American double major winner carded a six-under-par 65 to reach nine under overall, leaving him four shots behind the leaders heading into Sunday's final round in Yokohama.

Schauffele's round featured two eagles, several birdies and a costly double bogey, reflecting the unpredictable nature of his performance. He began with a bogey before picking up two birdies and an eagle at the par-five fourth hole. However, he gave back some of those gains with a double bogey at the fifth before responding immediately with another eagle at the sixth.

The American added four more birdies and another bogey to complete his round. Despite the fluctuations, he was satisfied with his overall score, describing the day as unusual because it combined excellent golf with several costly mistakes. Schauffele, who won Olympic gold in Tokyo in 2021, will now look to produce another strong performance as he attempts to retain his title.

Michael Brennan, Zach Bauchou and Jacob Bridgeman head into Sunday's final round tied at 13 under par. The trio hold a one-shot advantage over a group of challengers that includes Australian Adam Scott, setting up a competitive finish at Yokohama Country Club. Bridgeman is also seeking his third PGA Tour victory of the season.

Japan's Hideki Matsuyama endured a frustrating third round despite an impressive start. The 2021 Masters champion carded a two-under-par 69 to sit eight shots behind the leaders. He opened with four birdies and an eagle across his first seven holes but struggled on the back nine, recording five bogeys against just one additional birdie.

Matsuyama acknowledged the contrast between his strong opening and difficult finish, saying that small errors had undermined his performance. He plans to make adjustments before the final round as he seeks to improve his position on home soil.

Three-time major winner Jordan Spieth also remains within reach of the leading group. He posted a three-under-par 68 to reach seven under overall, six shots off the pace, as he continues his pursuit of a first PGA Tour title since April 2022.

Collin Morikawa, who won the tournament in Japan in 2023, faces a tougher challenge after reaching four under par. With the leaders separated from their closest challengers by just one stroke, Sunday's final round promises an intense battle for the Baycurrent Classic title.
