Nigeria’s Super Sand Eagles will miss the Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations for the second consecutive edition after Ghana’s Black Sharks secured a 10-7 aggregate victory in their 2026 qualifying tie.
The Nigerians lost the second leg 7-4 in Keta on Sunday, surrendering their hopes of reaching the continental finals scheduled for Senegal from Nov. 7 to Nov. 15.
The defeat followed a 3-3 draw in the first leg in Kaduna, where Isa Hamza Manga scored all three goals for Nigeria, while Mawuli Sosu netted twice for Ghana and Wise Nyamadi added the other goal.
With the tie finely poised ahead of the return fixture, Ghana capitalised on home advantage to score seven times, overcoming Nigeria’s four goals to seal qualification.
The outcome extends Nigeria’s struggles in the competition, having also failed to reach the 2024 edition after losing to Mauritania on the away-goals rule.
The latest setback means the two-time African champions will again be absent from the continent’s premier beach soccer tournament, which also serves as Africa’s qualifying pathway to the 2027 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup.
For Ghana, the victory completes a successful qualifying campaign against their West African rivals and secures a place at the finals in Senegal.
Nigeria must now reassess its preparations and performance as the team seeks to reclaim its place among Africa’s leading beach soccer nations.
