Sand Eagles Push African Champions Senegal to the Limit in Kaduna Thriller

Posted : 05 October 2026

Nigeria’s Sand Eagles gave African champions Senegal a stern test in Kaduna on Saturday before narrowly losing 6-4 in the first of two international friendly matches.

The encounter at the Murtala Muhammed Square Beach Soccer Pitch produced an entertaining contest, with Nigeria matching the defending African champions in an intense exchange of goals.

Senegal opened the scoring through Laye Diagne, but the Sand Eagles quickly responded as Abdullahi Hassan restored parity.

Hassan emerged as Nigeria’s standout performer, scoring all four of the Sand Eagles’ goals and earning the Man-of-the-Match award for his impressive individual display.

Senegal, however, maintained their attacking threat through Mamadou Sylla, who completed a hat-trick, while Ninou Jean-Paul Diatta and Asane Ba also found the net.

Despite the defeat, Nigeria’s performance against one of the continent’s strongest beach soccer sides provided valuable match preparation ahead of their upcoming competitive assignment.

The Sand Eagles will face Ghana in the CAF Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixture later this month, making the two-match series against Senegal an important part of their preparations.

Senegal, meanwhile, are using the friendlies to fine-tune their squad ahead of the Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations, where they will feature as defending champions and hosts.

The two teams will meet again at the Murtala Muhammed Square Beach Soccer Pitch on Monday morning in the second friendly.

Nigeria will hope to build on the performance and turn the lessons from the opening encounter into a stronger display in the return fixture.
