Sam Burns will take a narrow one-shot lead into Sunday’s final round of the US Open after an eventful third round at Oakmont. The American carded a one-under-par 69, highlighted by three birdies and two bogeys, to maintain his overnight lead and reach four under overall. The 28-year-old world number 22 remains in strong contention for his first major title as pressure builds from seasoned contenders.
JJ Spaun, who played alongside Burns on Saturday, stayed neck-and-neck with the leader for much of the round but dropped a crucial shot on the 18th hole, finishing the day one shot back. He’s joined at three under by 2013 Masters champion Adam Scott, who surged on the back nine with birdies at 13, 14, and a 15-footer at 17.
The 44-year-old Australian, the only major champion in the top 10, shot a three-under 67—tied for the day’s best round—to secure a place in Sunday’s final group.
Meanwhile, Viktor Hovland produced a rollercoaster round that included hitting two trees and a flagstick, yet still managed to record a level-par 70. A brilliant shot out of the rough on 17 earned him a key birdie to stay within striking distance.
Carlos Ortiz of Mexico also posted a 67 to move to level par, keeping his chances alive with 18 holes to go. England’s Tyrrell Hatton and Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre impressed as well, finishing at one over and three over, respectively.
Among the big names struggling to stay in contention, world number one Scottie Scheffler posted his best round of the week—a level-par 70—but remains eight shots adrift of the lead. Rory McIlroy’s hopes took a major hit as he slumped to a disappointing 74, falling back to 10 over par. As the stage is set for a thrilling Sunday finish, Burns, Scott, and Spaun are poised for a fierce battle at one of golf’s most demanding major venues.
