Ryu Hae-ran Takes Two-Stroke Lead at LPGA Black Desert Championship

Posted : 03 May 2025

Ryu Hae-ran overcame a slow start to card a five-under par 67 on Friday, securing a two-stroke lead midway through the LPGA Black Desert Championship in Utah. After beginning the day with a one-shot lead following her bogey-free, nine-under opening round, Ryu faced early struggles.

She dropped a shot but quickly regained momentum with back-to-back birdies at the fifth and sixth holes, followed by an eagle at the par-five ninth. Two additional birdies on the back nine gave her a 14-under total of 130.

Reflecting on her round, Ryu admitted the day started tough, but she found a rhythm with a chip-in birdie and eagle. After a challenging finish at the Chevron Championship last week, where she shared the 54-hole lead before fading on Sunday, Ryu is focused on managing the course and conditions at the Black Desert Championship.

She is aiming for her third LPGA victory, having won once in both 2023 and 2024. Ryu also anticipates windier conditions in the final rounds and is focused on keeping the ball in play and capitalizing on opportunities.

Ryu's closest competitor is compatriot Lee So-mi, who shot a second consecutive 66 to sit two shots back at 132. Lee has now posted back-to-back rounds in the 60s twice this season. Close behind her, Germany’s Esther Henseleit and South Korea’s Joo Soo-bin are tied for third at 133.

Thailand’s Ariya Jutanugarn, after a challenging two-under 70, is tied for fifth, along with Taiwan’s Hsu Wei-Ling, at 134. Despite tougher afternoon conditions, Ariya was unfazed by a double-bogey and bounced back with two birdies to stay in contention.
