Ryu Hae-ran and Ariya Jutanugarn bounced back from disappointing finishes at the Chevron Championship to start strong at the LPGA Black Desert Championship on Thursday. Ryu fired a brilliant nine-under-par 63, which included nine birdies, giving her a one-stroke lead after the first round.
She hit 13 of 14 fairways and 17 of 18 greens in regulation, with just 27 putts to finish atop the leaderboard.
Ryu had shared the 54-hole lead at last week's Chevron Championship but faltered with a final-round 76, missing the playoff by two strokes.
Ariya, on the other hand, entered the final hole of that event with a one-stroke advantage but bogeyed and was eliminated in a playoff that saw Japan's Mao Saigo claim victory. Both players were eager to move past those setbacks and focused on their performances at the Black Desert course in Ivins, Utah.
Ryu mentioned that her mindset had remained unchanged from last week, focusing on accuracy, and was happy with her performance, especially with her approach shots. She found the course to be challenging but manageable, with its rocky layout requiring precision.
Ariya also credited the morning conditions, noting that the lack of wind helped her shoot an error-free round, with eight birdies. She acknowledged her struggles the previous week but was determined to carry the positives into this tournament.
Hsu Wei-Ling, one of the few afternoon starters, made a strong move up the leaderboard, posting an eagle and six birdies, including three straight at the end of her round. A group of six players, led by Carlota Ciganda, were just one stroke behind with a 65, while another six players were tied at 66. Saigo, fresh off her major victory, overcame a rocky start to finish with a two-under 70.
