Ryan Fox Wins Canadian Open in Playoff Thriller for Second PGA Tour Title

Posted : 09 June 2025

New Zealand’s Ryan Fox clinched his second PGA Tour title in five weeks by triumphing over American Sam Burns in a dramatic playoff at the Canadian Open. Both players finished the final round tied at 18-under 262 at TPC Toronto Osprey Valley, with Burns posting a blazing eight-under 62 and Fox closing with a 66. After three playoff holes ended in stalemates, Fox delivered what he called “probably the greatest shot I've ever hit” — a 3-wood to eight feet — setting up a decisive birdie that clinched the title when Burns missed from 11 feet.

Fox became the first Kiwi golfer to claim two PGA Tour victories in the same year, having previously won the Myrtle Beach Classic. The playoff was tense, with both players struggling early in extra holes and Burns missing a six-foot putt for the win on the first. A change in the hole location ahead of the third extra hole added to the pressure, but Fox ultimately rose to the occasion with a stellar approach under swirling wind conditions. The victory also earned him a spot in the upcoming US Open, an opportunity he greeted with humor and humility.

The final round was packed with contenders, as Taiwan’s Kevin Yu finished third and Americans Cameron Young and Matt McCarty tied for fourth. Burns had started hot with a string of birdies and maintained momentum with a strong back nine, but Fox’s late push — including birdies at the 14th, 15th, and a crucial one on 18 — forced the playoff. With the New Zealand football team cheering him on in Toronto, Fox embraced the moment and the crowd support, finishing the day as a double PGA Tour winner and national hero.
