Rwanda hold nerve to stun South Africa in last-over Lagos thriller

Posted : 23 March 2026

Rwanda Women’s U-19 displayed remarkable composure under pressure to secure a dramatic victory over South Africa in a rain-affected encounter at the ongoing Nigeria Fifth Women’s Invitational T20I in Lagos.

The match, part of the Patricia Kambarami Cup at the Tafawa Balewa Square Oval, was reduced to 14 overs per side following a brief rain interruption, setting the stage for a tense, fast-paced contest.

Defending a modest total of 101 for seven, Rwanda were tested by a steady South African chase that appeared to be under control for large spells. However, a crucial middle-phase collapse shifted the momentum, as Rwanda struck three quick wickets to drag themselves back into contention.

South Africa, led by captain Mieke Van Voorst, fought hard to regain control, reaching 90 for three in 12 overs and putting themselves within touching distance of victory. Van Voorst anchored the innings with a composed 34 off 27 balls, keeping hopes alive heading into the final over.

With 11 runs required from the last six deliveries, the pressure told. Rwanda’s bowlers held their nerve brilliantly, denying South Africa any scoring opportunities off the first two balls and tightening the contest. The visitors ultimately fell just short, finishing on 100 for four.

Earlier, Rwanda’s innings was built on resilience after early setbacks. Despite losing key wickets in the powerplay, contributions from Clarisse Umotoniwase (26), Fanny Utagushimaninde (24), and a quickfire 17 from Uwase Merveille helped them post a competitive total.

Alice Ikuzwe’s all-round influence proved decisive, earning her the Player of the Match award after playing a key role in Rwanda’s narrow triumph.

Speaking after the match, Rwanda’s coach praised the team’s calmness in crucial moments, highlighting their growing confidence and consistency in the tournament.

Rwanda's disciplined bowling in the final over secured a famous victory against a formidable South African side in this rain-shortened thriller. The win underscores Rwanda's rising status in women's cricket as they showed the mental fortitude to defend a modest total under immense pressure. This result adds significant excitement to the Patricia Kambarami Cup as the competition in Lagos intensifies.
