Rwanda 2026: Nigeria Customs face uphill battle in “group of death” at CAVB Championship

Posted : 22 April 2026

Nigeria’s sole representative at the 2026 CAVB Men’s Club Championship, Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Volleyball Club, have been handed a daunting route to the knockout stage after being drawn into what many are already calling the tournament’s “group of death.”

Set to take place in Kigali, Rwanda, the championship will see the Nigerian side confront a stern Pool A lineup that includes host club Armee Patriotique Rwandaise (APR), Egypt’s Petrojet Sporting Club, Uganda’s Nemostars, Cameroon’s Litto Team Volleyball, and Zimbabwe’s Black Rhinos.

For Customs, the challenge is immediate and unforgiving.

Facing APR on home soil presents an early psychological and tactical hurdle, with the Rwandan side expected to draw massive support. Having finished fourth in the previous edition, APR enter the tournament with both pedigree and momentum.

Egypt’s Petrojet adds another layer of difficulty, bringing the technical quality and experience synonymous with North African volleyball, while Uganda’s Nemostars are widely respected for their structured and disciplined style of play.

Cameroon’s Litto Team and Zimbabwe’s Black Rhinos complete a highly competitive pool where surprises are likely and every set could prove decisive.

With only four teams progressing to the Round of 16, there is little room for inconsistency. Customs will need to combine tactical discipline with attacking efficiency, particularly at the net, to stand a realistic chance of advancing.

The tournament also features defending champions Al Ahly in Pool B, alongside several other strong contenders spread across the remaining groups, highlighting the depth and intensity of this year’s competition.

As the championship gets underway with APR taking on Black Rhinos, Nigeria’s focus will be firmly on the Customs team charged with overcoming the odds and making a statement on the continental stage.

The Nigeria Customs Service team faces a monumental task in Kigali as they navigate a group filled with seasoned continental giants. To progress, the squad must demonstrate exceptional resilience and tactical precision against high-caliber opponents like APR and Petrojet. Success in this challenging phase would significantly elevate the profile of Nigerian volleyball on the African continent.
