Rutherford Fires West Indies Past England

Posted : 12 February 2026

Day 5 of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 produced a blend of dominance, drama and decisive moments as group-stage battles intensified across venues in India and Sri Lanka. From a power-packed West Indies display to a rare double Super Over thriller, the tournament’s early narrative continued to take shape.

In Mumbai, the West Indies secured a crucial 30-run victory over England in a high-scoring encounter. Sherfane Rutherford was the standout performer, striking an unbeaten 76 to anchor his side to a formidable 196 for 6. England’s response never truly gathered momentum, as regular wickets derailed their chase before they were bowled out for 166. Spinner Gudakesh Motie played a key supporting role with timely breakthroughs, leaving England under pressure to win their remaining fixtures to keep Super Eight hopes alive.

Australia, meanwhile, made a commanding start to their campaign in Colombo with a comprehensive 67-run win over Ireland. After posting 182 for 6, powered by a disciplined batting effort, the Australian bowling attack took control. Nathan Ellis and Adam Zampa led the charge as Ireland were dismissed for 115, handing Australia a significant net run rate boost and early control in Group B.

Earlier in the day, South Africa and Afghanistan delivered one of the most dramatic contests of the tournament so far. With scores level at the end of regulation play, the match went into a Super Over — and then a second — before South Africa finally sealed victory. The tense finish underscored the fine margins defining the group stage and added another memorable chapter to this year’s competition.

Off the field, Sri Lanka were forced into a squad adjustment after losing star all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga to injury. Dushan Hemantha has been drafted into the squad ahead of their upcoming clash with Oman, as the former champions seek stability without their lead spinner.

Attention now shifts to Day 6, where India are set to face Namibia and Nepal will take on Italy, with valuable points and Super Eight positioning firmly in focus.
